This place is really special to me because it was a family trip and we were the first guests to stay at the property.
Seven Hills Tallarook is first and foremost a commercial meat goat farm, servicing restaurants in and around Melbourne. The farm is now spread out over more than 700 acres with over 2000 Australian Boer Goats roaming freely but when we stayed the farm was slightly smaller.
I am telling you this because the farm stay is all about understanding how the farm works, it's sustainability and how the animals are raised. I guess it's an educational stay to the extent you would like it to be. You can hang out with the chickens and turkeys, chase the pigs, fish for yabbies and learn about goats. There is surprisingly a lot to do at Seven Hills but the beauty is that you determine the pace of your stay.
Taylan and Megan Atar are the owners of Seven Hills Tallarook and live there with their children. They can provide a full service of cooking all your meals and entertaining with an array of activities (at additional cost) or if you prefer, they will leave you in peace to cook in their fabulous country kitchen and entertain yourself. We opted for a mix of both. We unfortunately never met Megan but Taylan was an unbelievable host.
He met us on arrival at the homestead, showed us around, explained how everything worked and detailed the activities. Quad biking, fishing, yabby catching, bush walking, spotlighting and animal finding and clay target shooting. Brilliant! And that's on top of the pool, spa, hammock, campfire and books we could use and multiple couches to nap on! How were we going to fit everything in together with some R and R?
What a treat to have such fabulous accommodation only one hour north from the Melbourne CBD in Victoria, Australia. This is proof that you don't have to always travel outside of your own country to enjoy a fabulous holiday or mini getaway.
We booked the whole homestead for our stay and I'm glad we did. There was 10 of us so the whole homestead provided multiple bedrooms, bathrooms and living areas for us all to spread out to either enjoy each other's company or take a break if someone was annoying you! To picture the homestead, imagine a single level country house in a horseshoe shape, a beautiful pool in the middle of the horseshoe which you can access from both sides of the property, sitting on seven hills with views to Seymour, Puckapunyal and the Tallarook State Forest. The country style kitchen is part of the open plan living area with the coonara fireplace taking centre stage which you can enjoy with a glass of red. But don't worry there is another kitchen if you need as well as a BBQ near the pool.
If you had a smaller group, the south wing of the homestead can actually be closed off so that you don't have to pay the expense for use of the whole house, just what you actually need. It's such a magnificent set up with views to match. The sunsets are truly magic which you can enjoy even when people are splashing around in the pool.
We were so lucky to have incredibly warm weather which was just the cherry on the top. This allowed us to enjoy the pool area a lot and resulted in us just hanging out rather than doing many of the activities on offer. We did have a great time quad biking with the whole family however (yes, that includes kids) and following Taylan around on the property. From incredible viewing spots to racing each other we felt like we lived there. Taylan never barked orders or told us off. It was a rare occasion where you got to enjoy yourself without the limitation of legalities. The unsaid rule seemed to be 'if you're an adult, enjoy at the activities at your own risk.' And we did. It was common sense and the way things used to be. Priceless. Tell me where you find a place like that these days?
We opted to cook for ourselves the whole time and enjoy the Atar's company when needed. Our stay at Seven Hills matched that of many exotic places I have visited overseas. In fact it was made even more special because I got to spend quality time with people I love most dearly, laughing, drinking, eating and doing bombs in the pool!
If you love the great outdoors, in particular the country, pop this place on your holiday list if ever in Melbourne, Australia.
